The Machinist (III) position in the Machine Shop is responsible for the setting up and operation of a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. This includes fabrication, modification, or repair to mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining tools. Management may assign additional duties as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Will independently repair any piece of production equipment and operate any metal working tool in the shop accurately except Hole Popper and EDM
Will perform bearing installation, precision alignment, gearbox assemble and repair
Will read parts drawings and set up machines to make parts
Will setup and operate machine tools, fit and assemble parts to make or repair metal parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties and layout and machining procedures
Will study specifications such as blueprints, sketches, damaged parts, or descriptions of parts to be placed, to determine tolerances of pieces to be machined, sequence of operations, and tool materials and machines required
Will measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining
Will setup and operate metal removing machines, such as lathe, milling machine, shaper, or grinder, to machine parts to specifications
Will verify conformance of work piece to specifications, using measuring instruments
Will position and secure work piece in holding device, such as chuck or collet, or on surface place or worktable with such devices as vises, V-blocks, and angle plates, and use hand tools such as files, scrapers, and wrenches, to fit and assemble parts to assemblies or mechanisms
Will verify dimensions and alignment with measuring instruments such as micrometer, height gauges, and gage blocks
ACCEPTABLE EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Must have high school diploma or GED
Assessed in reading at an 8th grade equivalency or higher and mathematics at a 10.1 grade equivalency or higher on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) exam through our Continuous Education and Development (CED) program or have an appropriate WorkKeys based on the job profile
Must have a Machine Tool Technology associates degree from a two-year accredited institution
Must pass the Wiesen Mechanical Aptitude test
Must pass a hands-on test
Minimum 7 to 10 years as a Machinist or otherwise qualified
Prefer experience operating conventional and CNC milling and turning machines
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Must have or be able to obtain confined space and lockout/tagout certifications
